Starlings (1st Dec 2010)

Starlings

It was so cold I took a fat ball in the house and crushed it once it had warmed up. I scattered the bits on the snow, and this is what these starlings are busy digging for. There had been more snow and the top layer was dry and powdery.  At times they were almost burying themselves in their eagerness to get to the food!

Robin (30th Nov 2010)

I was feeding the birds and this lovely robin was a frequent visitor.  He is perfect for a Christmas card, but was so hard to get a good photo of – I have plenty of duds!  This is another photo taken with the 55-300mm lens, and I took it through my back window.

In the depths of winter the sun doesn’t rise high enough to get into the back garden, so although it was a bright sunny day I didn’t have to contend with the harsh highlights and shadows that direct sunlight would produce.
