National Maritime Museum Cornwall (14 Oct 2025)

In theory this day was intended for me to talk from St Ives across to Penrith, but I had had enough of walking so I took the train to Falmouth to visit the NMMC there.

I was delighted to see both Superdocious – Rodney Patterson won gold in the 1968 Olympics in this boat – and Rita which Ben Ainslie won Olympic sailed to Olympic Gold in 2004, 2008 and 2012 – on display.

However there was only one exhibit that I took a photo of, a Dutch Pram Dinghy which was a refugee boat. The first part of the text on the information plaque reads:

Even before the beginning of World War Two, many Jews sought to escape from countries under Nazi control. After the war began, escape became much more difficult.

Despite Dutch neutrality, Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands on 10 May 1940, some nine months after the war started.

In late May 1940, this Dutch pram boat was used my Mr & Mrs Zeyimake, a Jewish Dutch could from Haarlem, capital of North Holland, to escape persecution from the Nazi regime.

It then gives an outline of the subsequent history of the boat. This exhibition truly moved me.
