Broughty Castle is one of the well-known landmarks at the entrance to the Tay, and was built there because of it’s strategic importance. It has extensive views over the approaches, including to Tayport on the opposite shore.
It’s adjacent to Broughty Harbour, and the lifeboat station is on the far side. The Castle now houses a museum, which includes information about Thomas Bouch’s ‘Floating Railway’, a roll-on roll-off goods train ferry. It was replaced by his original Tay Bridge which famously collapsed as a train crossed. Astonishingly the engine pulling that train was recovered, repaired, and continued in use (including being rebuilt) until 1919!
We paid a visit to the Pick-You-Own at Cairney Fruit Farm on the way home so were well supplied with strawberries for a couple of days!
