Mount Keen M234 (05 May 2025)

The dry weather continued and I decided to do Mount Keen, the most easterly Munro. Another early start was needed as it’s a long and tedious drive up Glen Mark to the car park, and also a somewhat tedious walk to the Queens’ Well where the real ascent starts. However the well itself is a delight!

Apparently “In 1861 they [Victoria and Albert] rode the 15 miles (24 km) from Balmoral to Glen Mark and met with Lord Dalhousie beside an artesian well. … To commemorate the visit, Lord Dalhousie erected a monument in the shape of a royal crown over the well.”

The ascent itself was hard on the feet but the view from the top was gorgeous, though for some reason I didn’t take any photos of it! Prominent was Lochnagar, and Mayar and Driesh popped up on the western horizon. I could also see a number of Glen Shee Munros that I’ve climbed.

The way down was even harder on the feet, the walk back from the Queens Well and the drive down Glen Mark even more tedious, but I had a fish supper in Edzell. It was yummy!
